Senate allows Crumbly to keep seat A senate committee voted to recommend to the full Senate that Senator Jack Crumbly keep his seat, almost putting to rest a year and a half long legal situation spurred by Arnell Willis, who lost a 2006 runoff election to Crumbly. Willis and attorney Mike Easley made charges that there were 881 votes in the race that were possibly illegitimate and sought a second election to produce a clear-cut winner. A campaign worker under employment from Willis’ attorney said that a ballot box could not be located in February was later found in a closet in the church that held the elections. While the committee unanimously agreed that fraud was present during the election, they recommended that Crumbly’s seat not be overturned. Many said that they doubted that Crumbly was aware of the sloppy election practices that have plagued St Francis County. The vote will go to the full Senate for a vote. Unseating a sitting Senator requires a two-thirds vote. The Senate is expected to uphold Crumby’s seat at the recommendation of the committee. What is a super delegate? With all of the talk in the news about super delegates, we thought we’d take some time to explain to our members about super delegates and the importance they will play in this year’s presidential election. Super Delegates are not elected through the normal primary and caucus process. They are designated by party rules and include high elected officials (members of the Congress and governors), party committee members and some former office holders. Unlike delegates awarded through primaries and caucuses, super delegates are not required to stay pledged to a specific candidate. In 2008, the Democratic Party has designated 796 super delegates. An estimated 4,049 total delegates will vote at the national convention, including super delegates. A candidate needs a total of 2,024 delegate votes to win the party’s nomination. Many experts say that Hillary Clinton will win the Democratic Party’s nomination because of the famous political prowess that the Clintons are known for. She and her husband have been rumored to holding meetings with super delegates and making deals to secure their vote. |
